Green Corridors is hosting ocean-focussed events during the eThekwini Municipality’s Blue Economy Week, which runs from 21 to 28 September 2024.

The week, is a strategic gathering of important stakeholders in an endeavour by the Municipality to stimulate the revitalisation of the economy linked to the ocean and beaches, through government, business and civil society efforts.

Using the theme "Navigating the Endless Wave of the Blue Future” the City will host a conference at the ICC covering areas such as tourism, maritime transport and services, fisheries, environment protection, biotechnology and many others, while various partners will host satellite events to highlight the importance of the “Blue Economy’.

Learners from around eThekwini will be hosted by Green Corridors at the GreenHub at Blue Lagoon from 23-27 September. This will be the central venue for an exploration of the ocean and beaches, and practices and innovations, that will educate and stimulate the conversations about the importance of the oceans to our City’s well-being, and economy. 

Activities include Guided Educational WalksCraft from Waste Workshops with sessions to create art and practical items from recycled materials, promoting sustainability with volunteers from WESSA; Daily screenings of thought-provoking short documentaries produced by NEWF Labs Programme that have an ocean focus, and innovative displays focusing on the future of ocean-based economies and green innovations such as Bokashi (compost making), how Green Corridors litterbooms help stop plastics entering the oceans, and sea rescue organisation NSRI.

The public is invited to visit the GreenHub and see the various demonstrations, watch NEWF Labs documentary films, and find out about Green Corridors sustainability and innovation practices, and to see how the Blue Economy can drive economic growth while preserving natural resources.

Green Corridors will also be supporting the International Coastal Clean Up on 21 September at the Beachwood Mangroves with the eZemvelo North Durban Honorary Officers.
