Green Corridors will host two events during eThekwini Enviro Week which sees numerous enviro-focussed activities being hosted from 1 to 9 June.

These events are part of a collective effort by the eThekwini Environmental Education & Public Awareness Network (EEPAN) to bring together a range of enviro-related events during significant days on the global calendar including World Environment Day on 5 June and World Oceans Day on 8 June.

Green Corridors will host a community event at the Inanda Wilderness Park, on June 5 to which community members and schools have been invited, along with other stewardship organisations including Botanic Gardens, Parks Department, and a contingent of traditional healers and Nyangas. The Nyangas will be in attendance to share knowledge in this natural space of plants and herbs with the community and learners. This is a day of knowledge sharing and exploration around the park that will be enjoyed by 200 people.

Then in the oHlange Catchment Area, as part of an important ceremony to mark World Oceans Day, learners from areas around will deposit environmental “dumplings” into heavily polluted tributaries of the oHlanga River on Friday, 7 June. These tennis-ball sized dumplings have been pre-made with specially formulated microorganisms in a clay and sludge mix ensuring gradual microorganism release that can help decontaminate the polluted rivers, ahead of reaching the ocean.

Green Corridors is hoping to begin some important partnerships with corporates and businesses around the Ohlanga Catchment area to implement multiple initiatives in an effort to improve the health of the rivers, and in turn the ocean, with the ultimate goal of reclaiming the Blue Flag status of beaches in this area.
